The Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity has a nice ring to it.

From its name, one would think it’s charged with getting big money out of politics or making it easier for people to vote (through automatic or online voter registration, expanding early voting and weekend voting, addressing long lines at the polls, restoring the franchise to felons, and especially outlawing the discriminatory I.D. requirements being implemented by many states).

Oops, wrong commission.

This is the one created yesterday by President* Trump via executive order, expending taxpayer dollars to double down on his fantastical claim that 3 to 5 million people (allegedly undocumented immigrants) cast votes illegally in the last election.

This commission is a who’s-who of voting rights stalwarts, from Vice President Mike Pence to Kansas Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Kris Kobach (for a catalogue of Kobach’s years-long attempts to restrict the vote in Kansas, check out this Brennan Center report) to Hans von Spakovsky (just Google him).

How to help pick up where the fight in Selma left off

Of course, this is egregious, but it isn't new.  Catch up on the 50 year history of a concerted attempt to roll back the Voting Rights Act with the excellent New York Times piece, “A Dream Undone”.

Urge your governor to refuse to hand over to Trump’s commission.

Support the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, which is consistently bringing cases against voter I.D. laws.
