How to Help

If you're like us, your digital life is one big, fast news feed. Some of this news is messed up. How to Help works in the news cycle to connect you with ways to do something about the day's big stories.

The Earth Shook Again

The Earth Shook Again

Less than two weeks since the devastation of the largely-indigenous states of Oaxaca and Chiapas (from Mexico's strongest earthquake in 100 years), a 7.1 magnitude earthquake has hit the states of Puebla and Morelos, as well as nearby Mexico City.

The images are almost too much for the heart to bear.  Hundreds of people have died, including dozens of kids when their Mexico City elementary school collapsed.

How to help earthquake recovery in Mexico

Follow #FuerzaMexico on Twitter for updates.

Check Como Ayudar for a crowdsourced list of volunteer and donation opportunities in Oaxaca, Chiapas, Puebla, Morelos, and Mexico City.

Donate to Topos Mexico ("the moles"), a volunteer brigade with a long, heroic history of saving lives amidst the rubble. Their website is down but you can donate via their PayPal account. Once you're logged into your PayPal account, click "Pay for good or services" and enter the Topos email address: donativos@brigada-rescate-topos.org

Support Partners in Health (motto: "We go. We make house calls. We build health systems. We stay.") which runs 10 rural health clinics across Mexico, including the regions impacted by these two earthquakes.

Remember:  Many Mexican-Americans with family members in the earthquake zones can't or won't travel to Mexico in a xenophobic Trump era defined by risk and fear.  See our prior posts on defending DACA and supporting immigrant rights.
