How to Help Sanctuary Activist Ravi Ragbir

How to Help Sanctuary Activist Ravi Ragbir

Sanctuary is a pretty long-established principle in many faith traditions.

How long ago are we talking?

Think back to the days of the Hebrew Bible, the Christian Bible, and Holy Qu'ran.

Fast forward: activists are now channeling the spirit of religious sanctuary to protect immigrants from Trump's detention and deportation machine.

But similar to its attacks on sanctuary cities, the Trump Administration seems to be targeting leaders of sanctuary groups themselves.

Last week, ICE detained Ravi Ragbir - the director of the New Sanctuary Coalition of New York City - at his routine ICE check-in.

One of the coalition's original co-founders, Jean Montrevil, was detained just days earlier by ICE.

The detentions prompted immediate protests (two members of the New York City Council were among those arrested) and uncertainty about what will happen next.

Update:  Jan. 29:  Jean has been deported to Haiti.  His family has set up a donation page to help him build from the ground up.  Ravi has been ordered released, at least temporarily, by United States District Judge Katherine Forrest, who said: "There is, and ought to be in this great country, the freedom to say goodbye. That is, freedom to hug one’s spouse and children, the freedom to organize the myriad of human affairs that collect over time."  Detention Watch Network is following the cases of other activists who have been detained.
