Attorney General Jeff Sessions loves "states' rights" (when they turn back the clock on things like voting rights, police reform, same sex marriage, LGBT protection from hate crimes, and marijuana legalization).

And when states assert their right to protect immigrants?

Not so much.

Yesterday the Justice Department sued California (yes, the whole Golden State) for its 3 sanctuary laws that seek to protect immigrants from the Trump deportation machine.

This move comes in the wake of the Trump Administration's attacks on Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, who recently warned Oakland residents of likely ICE raids.

How to help have California's back

Read the Sacramento Bee editorial board's aptly-titled response to the lawsuit"Go ahead Mr. President. Bring it on."

If you're in Sacramento today, join a protest outside AG Jeff Session's appearance discussing the lawsuit (5th & J St. from 7am-10am PT).

Encourage your own city to follow Oakland's lead.  In addition to the city's public stand against ICE, a new law (introduced by Oakland City Councilmember Abel Guillén) bans city business with any contractor that does work on Trump's proposed border wall.

Tweet your support for California Governor Jerry Brown, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Oakland City Councilmember Abel Guillén, and others stepping up to protect immigrant rights.

How to help create sanctuary wherever you live

If you're a leader or member of a faith institution, consider becoming a sanctuary.

If you're a student or teachermake your school a sanctuary.

If you work (or for that matter, dine) in a restaurant, join the Sanctuary Restaurants campaign.

If you employ a domestic worker (like a nanny or housecleaner), answer the Sanctuary Home call to action.

Also: learn about and support some of the people currently or recently in sanctuary.
