If I Only Had a Heart

If I Only Had a Heart

World, meet Mr. Trump's wall. If you doubted his campaign promise to make America the planet's biggest gated community, he has set out to make you a believer.

After tweeting, deleting, and then re-tweeting NATIONAL SECURITY in ALL CAPS for emphasis, he announced his plans today. In a nutshell:

• Build a really big wall and make Mexico pay for it (in a complicated way that doesn't involve payment)
• Strip funding for sanctuary cities
• Beef up enforcement to expand detention and deportation

More announcements could be coming soon about visa suspensions and refugee restrictions. Stay tuned.

One small but significant bright spot: there doesn't yet seem to be an attempt yet to overturn Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), the Obama Administration program that defers deportation for some undocumented immigrants who arrived as kids.

About DACA, Trump press secretary Sean Spicer channeled the true spirit of January 25, Opposite Day, when he said: “The president understands the magnitude of this problem. He’s a family man. He has a huge heart.”

How to help make a dangerous time safer

Check to see if you live in a sanctuary state or city, and let your local elected officials know they have your back as they begin to feel the heat.

Support the sanctuary movement in other ways (even in restaurants!).

Know your rights and help your neighbors know theirs.

Listen to a rapid-response conference call recorded today by immigrant and refugee advocates.
