The U.S. Supreme Court issued its judicial translation of then-candidate Donald Trump’s 2015 call for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on.”

In a 5-4 decision, the Court deemed Trump’s travel ban constitutional, reversing an earlier challenge in Hawaii. The Court’s majority refused to consider Trump’s previous statements about Muslims.

But in her scathing dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor spelled out exactly why Trump’s previous statements were so central to the case: “Based on the evidence in the record, a reasonable observer would conclude that the Proclamation was motivated by anti-Muslim animus.”

Now that the Supreme Court has said where it stands, the work to end religious discrimination begins anew.
